The Machame route, also known as the “Whisky Route” is one of the most popular and recommended routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.  This popular route with paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice fields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. The total Machame route distance is approximately 62 kilometers from gate to gate.

One can complete the Machame route in 6 days. Although 7 days are recommended. Both options include a climb high, sleep low acclimatization day.

Program Description

Arrive In Tanzania:

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to Moshi or Arusha. Your head guide will meet you for your briefing, gear check, and arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.
We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.
Dinner and overnight at Moshi or Arusha. Bed, and Breakfast-included.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640 meters) – Machame Hut (2,835 meters)

Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Machame Route – 6 Days, begins at Machame Gate (1,640 meters) Typically, you will drive from the town of Moshi or Arusha to the gate, we walk through the lush lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Slowly gaining altitude while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest, you will arrive at the first Machame Hut, situated at 3000m above sea level
It is a clear day we may get our first closer look at the glaciated dome of Kibo if the evening clouds. Machame Gate to Machame Hut (6-7 hours walking.

Day 2: Machame Hut (2,835 meters) – Shira Two Camp (3,850 meters)

A Shorter day climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as a picnic site, and continue up a gentler ascent through the lower alpine moorland, which is known for beautiful wild alpine flowers. The most spectacular views of Kibo peak can be seen from Shira Camp. Machame Hut to Shira Camp (4-6 hours walking.

Day 3: Shira Two Camp(3,850m) Via Lover Tower (4,600m) -Barranco Camp (3,900m)

After breakfast, we walk on a gentle ascent and panoramic views. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and after hot lunch the bottom of the Lava Tower (4,600 m.) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.).
Shira Camp to Barranco valley: 5-7 hours walking.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,900m) – Barafu Camp (4,680m)

The steep climb up the eastern wall leads us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. We then take a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo, the trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley. After a short break for a hot lunch, we take a steep climb out of Karanga, and an easy path on compacted scree with wide views through this empty and dry landscape up to Barafu Camp. Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp:  7-9 hours walking.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,680 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Down to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. We begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to the rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5,735m. We will rest there for a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to the main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa. After a few minutes to appreciate your accomplishment we descend to Barafu is amazingly fast, and we stop at Barafu Camp for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Mweka Camp.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp: 13-15 hours walking.

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

A gentle walk takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka gate successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you with packed Lunch at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner, and celebrations!! Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate: 3-5 hours walking.

Day 01: Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, our Serengeti Budget Mobile Camping Safari will start at Lake Manyara National Park. The captivating park is situated at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park has an extensive amount of species due to the various distinctive habitats. The shores of Lake Manyara are obscured with the pink hues of the flamingo. The park is home to over three hundred and fifty bird species and exotic birds often migrate to this sanctuary. You can expect to see the Cape clawless otter, buffalo, elephants, Egyptian mongoose, hippos, giraffes, impalas, and Lake Manyara National Park has the largest concentration of baboons in the world. We will enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park and in the afternoon we will proceed to our Campsite,  comprehensive camping facilities are available.

Day 02: Serengeti National Park.

Early morning depart to Serengeti National Park. The route we travel happens to pass the crater rim – there is a small prospect of spotting some game. The Serengeti is currently categorized as one of the seven natural wonders of Africa. We will stop for an enticing picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping). After lunch, your game drive will venture further into the Serengeti to complete the tour for the day. The Serengeti Camp will ensure that you are provided with comprehensive camping facilities.

Day 03: Full day Serengeti National Park.

Spend a full day in Serengeti for game drives, return to the camp for hot lunch then relaxation before departing for an afternoon game drive/you can depart with a picnic lunch box for a full day game drive.

Day 05: Ngorongoro Crater Tour

Drive to Ngorongoro Crater and descend inside the crater for game drives with picnic lunch boxes. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and leopards. The only animal you won’t see here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steeps sides of the crater. In the late afternoon, we travel back to Arusha.

Another day we heading to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Finally, we will descend into the crater. 6 Days Discover The Tanzania on Foot Safari start with Walking safari in Arusha National Park, you can easily start viewing the populations of wildlife like the giraffe, buffalo, zebras, and black and white colobus monkeys just after 30 minutes drive from Arusha city.
In the morning clients will join the Hadzabe and interact with them, and learn so many stuff like how to make fire by using two dry sticks, the way which has been used for thousands of years. The Bushmen will teach them how to use their bow and arrows, collecting some tubers, roots, and fruits with the women or join the men on hunting. Hunting is done in the morning; clients will follow the hunters behind and see how the hunting is done. The honey gathering is part of it, but depending on the season as the honey gathering is done in the rainy season.

Itinerary Description.

Day 1: Walking Safari Arusha National Park.

Full-day walking tour in Arusha National Park, You can easily start viewing the populations of wildlife like the giraffe, buffalo, zebras, and black and white colobus monkeys just after 30 minutes drive from Arusha city.
The park has an incredible variety of fauna and flora, which cannot fail to impress. Hollywood also chose this region to film the movie “Hatari” in which Hardy Kruger starred alongside the legendary John Wayne. Your day trip will include a visit to the Ngurdoto Crater. Buffaloes, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras, and baboons can be seen all year round as well as many different bird species. At the Momella Gate, an armed ranger will be waiting for you to accompany you on the walking safari that will give you the chance to experience the wildlife up-close. Only a few other national parks in Tanzania give you such an opportunity and it is something that should not be missed. Lunch will be taken at a picnic place and in the afternoon, you will continue your tour in the safari vehicle through the Arusha National Park. After plenty of time allocated for you to observe the wildlife, we will take you back to Arusha for accommodation.

Day 2: Game Drive Tarangire National Park.

Today we drive to Tarangire National Park, for excellent game viewing. Tarangire is a small park that offers some excellent sights. Generally, in the dry seasons, Tarangire comes alive as wildlife and birdlife congregate on the Tarangire River, which is a permanent source of water. We spend the night in our lodge beautifully set outside the park with stunning views and a unique atmosphere later evening drive to Eileen’s Tree Inn at Karatu.

Day 3: Cultural Tour  Hadzabe and Datoga Tribes.

 Start off early with your bushman guide to meet a group of resident Hadzabe people. Enjoy the Hadzabe Tour walking into the bush with the only hunter-gatherers remaining in the East African region. The Hadzabe speak a click-based language and move their encampments with the seasonal movements of the wildlife. Your guide is a member of the group and teaches you more about how they hunt, track wildlife, make fire, and even take honey from bee’s nests before introducing you to his people and explaining a little more about the customs and the way of life. In the afternoon we travel to the Maasai market where you will have the opportunity to get the spectacular photos you want. In the evening we drive back to our hotel Eileen’s Tree Inn Karatu.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Tour.

After breakfast, we drive to the Ngorongoro gate to visit the largest intact volcanic crater in the world, the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. At more than 2,000 feet deep and 12 miles in diameter, the Ngorongoro Crater has one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. 30,000 animals make their home in this crater, making it an ideal place for sightings of the ‘big 5′ – lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard. We enjoy a game drive and picnic lunch in the crater, also known as the ’8th Wonder of the World.
In the afternoon we make a short journey from Ngorongoro Crater to Lake Manyara.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate– Mti Mkubwa Camp: Rainforest

After breakfast Arusha/ Moshi, we will drive to Lemosho Gate. Here you will be registered by the national park authorities and your trek through a dense rain forest begins. Today will be a shortest walk of the entire trek, about 2½ hours, which gives you a small taste of what lies ahead in the coming days. The walk takes you through dense and unspoiled rain forest, which is very different from the scenery you will have in the next couple of days. Your destination for the day is the beautiful Big Tree Camp at 2780 m (Swahili Mti Mkubwa).
Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp ( 3-4 hours walking.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira One Camp: | Moorland

Elevation: 2785m/9137ft to 3895m/12,779ft
Altitude gained: 1110m

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we leave the forest behind, the trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. A full day trekking with a slow and steady pace up to Shira Camp.
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp: 6-7 hours walking.

Day 3: Shira One Camp –Shira Hut: | Moorland

Elevation: 3504m/11,496ft to 3895m/12,779ft
Altitude gained: 391m

We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little-used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth. (3,840 m): 4-5 hours walking.

Day 4: Shira Hut – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp: | Semi-Desert

Elevation: 3895m/12,779ft to 3986m/13,077ft
Altitude gained: 91m

Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak before we then continue, South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we come to a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continue to descend to overnight at Barranco Camp.               Shira Camp to Barranco valley: (5-7 hours walking)

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp: | Alpine Desert

Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,253ft
Altitude gained: 48m

A steep climb up the eastern wall leads us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. We then take a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo, the trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, finally, we have a steep climb up to Karanga Camp.
Barranco Camp to Karanga camp: (4-5 hours walking).

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp: | Alpine Desert

Elevation: 4034m/13,253ft to 4662m/15,295ft
Altitude gained: 628m

Today we take the Traverse Route that takes up the Barafu Ridge, we walk up quite slowly to the final camp before your last ascent day to the summit.
The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp: 3-4 hours walking.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp: | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit

Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft
Altitude gained: 1233m
Descent to 3090m/10,150ft
Altitude lost: 2789m

Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. We begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to the rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5,735m. We will rest there for a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to the main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa. After a few minutes to appreciate your accomplishment we descend to Barafu is amazingly fast, and we stop at Barafu Camp for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Mweka Camp.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp: (13-15 hours walking).

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate: | Rainforest

Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft
Altitude lost: 1473m

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles.

From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha (about 2 Hours). Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!!
